FSSAI nutrition label requirements

The FSSAI nutrition panel for pre-packaged food — what must be declared, per 100 g / 100 ml and per serving, and the bold sugar / salt / fat rule coming into force by 1 July 2027.

What the nutrition panel must declare

The panel is declared per 100 g / 100 ml and per serving: energy (kcal), protein, carbohydrate (including total sugars and added sugars), fat (including saturated fat and trans fat), and sodium or salt. Vitamins and minerals, where declared, are shown in metric units with their percentage contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (%RDA).

RDA values follow the ICMR-NIN reference for an average Indian adult; where no Indian RDA exists, Codex or WHO values may be used.

The bold sugar, salt and saturated-fat rule

Under the Labelling & Display First Amendment Regulations, the %RDA contributed by added sugar, saturated fat and sodium must appear in bold, larger font, with compliance required by 1 July 2027.

Serving size

The serving size is declared by the manufacturer, and the panel shows the per-serving values alongside the per-100 g / 100 ml figures.

When the panel can be simplified or omitted

Packages with a surface area below 30 cm² may use abbreviated labelling. The nutrition panel is not required for raw agricultural produce and certain single-ingredient foods with minimal labelling.
