FSSAI labelling requirements for packaged food

Every pre-packaged food sold in India must carry an FSSAI-compliant label under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. This is the full set of mandatory declarations — what each one is, and how LabelYog builds them from your recipe.

The mandatory declarations at a glance

An FSSAI label carries: the name of the food; the list of ingredients; nutritional information; the veg / non-veg mark; a declaration of food additives; allergen information; the name and complete address of the manufacturer, marketer, packer or importer; the FSSAI logo with licence number; net quantity; the retail sale price (MRP); consumer-care details; the lot / batch / code number; the date of manufacture or packaging; and the best-before, use-by or expiry date. Imported food also declares the country of origin.

Name and list of ingredients

The food's name, and the ingredients in descending order of weight. Additives are shown by their function class and name (or INS number), and compound ingredients are broken out where the regulations require.

Nutritional information

The nutrition panel is declared per 100 g / 100 ml and per serving: energy, protein, carbohydrate (including total sugars and added sugars), fat (including saturated and trans fat) and sodium / salt. LabelYog builds the panel to the accepted FSSAI layout from your recipe.

The notified First Amendment 2026 (in force 1 July 2027) covers non-retail containers, FSSAI-logo relief on packs of 100 cm² or less, and infant-nutrition %RDA exemptions. A separate DRAFT amendment (February 2025) proposes showing the %RDA contributed by added sugar, saturated fat and sodium in bold, larger font — it is not yet notified law.

The veg / non-veg mark

Indian labels carry a mark: a green filled circle inside a green square (vegetarian) or a brown filled triangle inside a brown square (non-vegetarian). LabelYog derives the mark from your ingredients rather than asking you to assert it.

Allergen declaration

Allergens are declared in the wording required by FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulation 5(14); LabelYog screens your ingredients and raises the declaration automatically.

FSSAI logo, licence number and business details

The label shows the FSSAI logo with the licence number of the brand owner — and of the manufacturer, packer or bottler if different — plus the full name and address of the responsible business.

MRP, net quantity, consumer care and date marking

The retail sale price (MRP, inclusive of all taxes), the net quantity under Legal Metrology, a consumer-care contact, the lot / batch / code number, the date of manufacture or packaging and the best-before, use-by or expiry date all appear on the label.

Language

Mandatory particulars may be given in English or Hindi (Devanagari); LabelYog assembles them in the language the market requires.
