FSSAI labelling requirements for beverages

Packaged beverages in India carry the general FSSAI declarations plus rules specific to caffeine, fruit content and water. Here is what a beverage label must show.

Caffeine and caffeinated beverages

A non-alcoholic beverage with more than 145 mg/L of caffeine must be labelled a 'Caffeinated Beverage' (maximum 300 mg/L); other beverages keep caffeine at or below 145 ppm. A caffeinated beverage must declare 'High Caffeine — X mg per serving', the caution 'Not recommended for children, pregnant or lactating women and persons sensitive to caffeine', and 'Consume no more than 500 ml per day'.

Fruit content declaration

A carbonated beverage that contains fruit juice must declare the amount when the juice is 5% or more (2.5% or more for lime or lemon). Soft drinks and ready-to-serve fruit beverages declare the addition of fruit pulp or juice.

Packaged and mineral water

Water-based beverages use water conforming to the packaged drinking water or mineral water standards, and packaged water carries the mandatory BIS / ISI mark.

The general declarations still apply

Every beverage also carries the nutrition panel (per 100 ml and per serving), the veg / non-veg mark, the ingredient and additive declarations, and the FSSAI logo with licence number. LabelYog builds them from your recipe.
