A barcode is not a legal requirement anywhere
This is worth saying first because nobody else does. A barcode is NOT a mandatory particular in any of the labelling regimes LabelYog covers. No food law requires one. It is a commercial requirement imposed by retailers, not a legal one imposed by regulators.
That has a practical consequence people get wrong in both directions. The rules that govern where the MANDATORY particulars sit -- the field of vision rules, the same-surface rules -- do not reach the barcode, because it is not one of them. And conversely, a market's own presentation rules may still constrain other matter on the pack.
LabelYog places the codes for layout balance, clear of the nutrition panel and above the safe line, and says in the designer brief that this is a LAYOUT decision rather than a legal clearance. If your retailer or your market specifies a position, that instruction wins over ours.
Magnification is the number that decides whether it scans
A retail EAN-13 or UPC-A symbol is defined at a nominal size and then scaled. GS1 permits a magnification range from 80% to 200% for retail point of sale. Below 80% you are outside the specification and the symbol may fail at the till.
At the 80% floor the symbol occupies about 29.83 mm wide by 21.0 mm high, and that width INCLUDES both quiet zones. At 100% it is about 37.3 mm by 25.9 mm. Those are the figures to reserve space against -- reserving the bar width alone and adding the quiet zones afterwards is the classic way a pack runs out of room.
The height matters as much as the width. Truncating a barcode's height to fit a narrow panel is common and it degrades scanning at exactly the angles a checkout operator uses.
Quiet zones: the white space is part of the symbol
The quiet zone is the clear margin either side of the bars, and it is not padding. A scanner uses it to find where the symbol begins and ends. For EAN and UPC it is 9 modules on each side under the GS1 General Specifications -- a module being the width of the narrowest bar.
In millimetres at retail sizes that is roughly 3.6 mm each side. The single most common cause of a symbol that will not scan is artwork placed into that margin: a border, a fold, a seam, or another element crowding the bars.
A QR code has its own requirement. ISO/IEC 18004 mandates a quiet zone of at least 4 modules on every side. A 29-module QR with its 4-module quiet zone needs about 14.65 mm square at retail; scaling a QR into a smaller CSS box shaves the quiet zone off the right and bottom edges and produces a code that looks perfect and does not scan.
ITF-14, the case and outer-carton symbol, needs a larger quiet zone again -- about 6.5 mm -- and it needs BEARER BARS, the solid frame around the symbol. Those are GS1-mandatory on ITF-14 and they exist to stop a partial scan on corrugated where the printing is coarse.
The digits under the bars are mandatory too
The human-readable interpretation -- the digits printed beneath the bars -- is required, not optional. GS1's own guidance is explicit about it, and a symbol supplied without digits is incomplete.
They exist so a cashier can key the number when the symbol will not scan, which is precisely the situation where a truncated quiet zone has already caused a problem. LabelYog draws them by default on UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ITF-14.
Why barcodes fail at the till
In practice the failures cluster. A symbol scaled below 80% magnification. A quiet zone crowded by artwork or a fold. A truncated bar height. Insufficient contrast -- the bars must be dark on a light background, and red bars are effectively invisible to a red-laser scanner.
Printing on a curved or reflective surface, or across a seam, causes the rest. A symbol that verifies flat on a proof can fail wrapped around a small jar.
Verify on the real press and a real scanner before the run. A symbol that fails at the till is reprinted at the brand owner's cost, and that cost is not the artwork -- it is the stock.
What LabelYog generates
UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8 and ITF-14 as scalable vector artwork, with the human-readable digits, the correct quiet zone for the symbology, and bearer bars on ITF-14.
The barcode is placed into the label artwork alongside the nutrition panel and the mandatory particulars, so you are not reconciling two files. Where the space reserved is smaller than the GS1 retail floor, the designer brief says so in millimetres rather than leaving the designer to discover it.
You still need your own GS1 company prefix. We generate the symbol from the number you hold; we do not issue numbers, and anyone who offers to sell you a single barcode number outside the GS1 system is selling you a future problem.
